Part of VENTO SUL's PROGRAM
Location: Espaço Espelho D'Agua
Lisbon, Portugal

Nibs and Guy have toured many major festivals and venues throughout Europe and the UK in promotion of their SAMA nominated album, “In the Shade of the Wild Fig”, but is through VENTO SUL that they are performing for the first time in Portugal.

The duo has also won the very prestigious “Standard Bank Ovation Award” at The National Arts Festival. These accolades led to further sold out performances at numerous festivals and concert halls in both South Africa and in Europe receiving rave reviews for both their live show and their recorded work. Van der Spuy and Buttery were then invited to perform with the 52 piece KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, dubbed “Africa’s greatest orchestra” and were later voted “Top Live Show of the Year” by The Cape Times.

GUY BUTTERY

“Guy Buttery is something of a National treasure”, says South Africa’s leading newspaper The Mercury. As an internationally recognised musician, this multi-instrumentalist enjoys invitations to play sell-out performances all over the globe. The USA, UK, Australia, France, Brazil, and Italy have all welcomed him back year after year. However, to simply label Guy Buttery as one of South Africa’s musical phonemes would be an injustice. His international role has surpassed merely performing concerts to foreign audiences. It has evolved into one as an ambassador of South African music, inspiring people across the world with his homegrown style at the very heart of his talent and tenacity. Guy’s distinct unification of South African guitar music is the musical advocate for everything positive and beautiful about the place he calls home.

At the age of 18, Guy Buttery’s debut album was nominated for ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Best Instrumental’ at the South African Music Awards (SAMA’s) making him the youngest nominee in the history of the event. Guy then went on to collect two SAMA’s in 2010 and again in 2014. He has also received numerous other major National accolades including the Ovation Award for his live performances at the National Arts Festival, and has been honoured with more of these prestigious awards than any other artist.

Buttery has worked with an incredible myriad of artists including Dave Matthews, Jethro Tull, Vusi Mahlasela, multiple Grammy Award Winner Will Ackerman, Salif Keita, Preston Reed, Kaki King, The Violent Femmes, Jon Gomm and countless others. The media has cited him “as one of the finest exponents of the acoustic guitar in the World.” Expect high dynamics, deep grooves, delicate African inflections and mind-bending guitar playing of an entirely new order.

NIBS VAN DER SPUY

Nibs van der Spuy is one of the most extraordinary and exciting, world acoustic guitarists and exports to come out of South Africa. Raised in the fertile province of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Nibs immersed himself in his natural environment to formulate a truly consummate and original sound. Growing up with the Beatles and learning first hand from traditional Zulu Maskandi guitarists, he quickly soaked up a rich tapestry of his close surroundings and beyond.

After playing the local folk scene around South Africa for years and gathering up a loyal following, his big stage break came after supporting Crosby, Stills and Nash on their 1996 South African tour. After that he was signed to the SHEER (South African World Music label) where he has released over 10 albums.

His third solo release, BEAUTIFUL FEET received highly acclaimed accolades around the world where it was album of the month in four German publications and RADIO FRANCE FIP pick of the week. Nibs continues to spread his musical beauty around the world where he has shared stages with the likes of Ben Harper, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Gito Baloi, Kelly Joe Phelps, Piers Faccini, Phillip Henry & Hannah Martin and Shawn Phillips and recording the critically acclaimed, ‘In the shade of the wild fig’, with long-time friend and collaborator, Guy Buttery. Nibs' latest release,’ NATALIA', was produced by world renowned producer

Mark Tucker (Portishead, PJ Harvey, Jethro Tull). Besides working on material for an upcoming album on the Lisbon Coast.

Power is domination, control, and therefore a very selective form of truth which is a lie.
